So grab your calendar (or at least your group chat), and let’s dive into the very best student events Sheffield has to offer.

Annual Things to Do in Sheffield for Students

Sheffield’s event calendar is second to none, with events so good that they return year after year. You’ll make the kind of memories you’ll talk about long after your uni days are over. So, here are some student faves you won’t want to miss out on.

Tramlines Festival

Every July, Sheffield hosts one of the biggest, most legendary inner-city music festivals in the UK. Tramlines takes over Hillsborough Park with an elite line-up of chart-toppers, indie faves, and rising stars. Think beer gardens, glitter, and dancing with thousands of your fellow students. It’s not just about the music either. With comedy acts, street food, and vibes for days, there’s something to keep you entertained all day and night.

Sheffield DocFest

Love films that make you think? Taking place each June is Sheffield DocFest, an internationally renowned documentary festival that brings filmmakers, students, and creatives together each summer. There are screenings, Q&As, workshops, and even virtual reality exhibits. No wonder it’s the UK’s leading documentary festival! It’s perfect if you’re into media, social justice, or just want a break from Netflix.

Sheffield Freshers Week

Let’s not forget the main event for uni students: Sheffield Freshers Week. Both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam go all out every September with everything from silent discos to inflatable assault courses. Expect themed club nights, city tours, and free food. It’s your chance to dive into student life headfirst and make new friends (even if you don’t remember every detail the next day).

Sheffield University Events

Your Student Union isn’t just a spot to kill time between lectures. It’s the beating heart of Sheffield’s university events. From wild club nights and sports rivalries to laid-back quizzes and society socials, it’s where campus life really comes alive.

Sheffield’s Student Nightlife

Student Union club nights have a great reputation for a reason. Both Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield throw some seriously iconic weekly nights, courtesy of their Student Unions. From the retro chaos at Pop Tarts to the sports team takeover at ROAR, you’ll quickly find your go-to. If dressing up in neon, glitter, or weird costumes is your thing, you’re in luck.

Society Fairs

There are hundreds of student societies to join, including drama and debate, as well as niche clubs like Taylor Swift appreciation or competitive Pokémon battling. Society fairs are a great way to get involved, make friends, and fill your calendar with socials and meetups.

Varsity Sports

Whether you’re on the pitch or cheering from the sidelines, varsity season brings the heat. Tensions run high (in a fun way, of course), and the atmosphere is unforgettable. Get your face paint ready and support your university’s team!

Pub Quizzes, Bingo & Karaoke

Not every night has to be a big one. Student Unions regularly host events like pub quizzes, bingo with bizarre prizes, and karaoke sessions that are 90% vibes and 10% talent.

Hidden Gems & Local Favourites

Sometimes, Sheffield’s best events aren’t the ones that make the big posters, but totally complete your uni experience, making it both unique and unforgettable. Here are a few low-key legends:

  • Peddler Market – It’s a monthly street food market in a converted warehouse, serving craft beer, DJs, indie stalls and the best bao buns you’ve ever eaten.
  • Yellow Arch Studios – This Kelham Island venue is a hidden gem, with intimate gigs, world music, and an atmosphere like no other.
  • Poetry Nights & Open Mics – Check out DINA, Theatre Deli or Kommune for creative events and arty vibes.
  • Treehouse Board Game Café – For chill evenings and casual fun, this café offers hundreds of games and great coffee (and wine – we won’t judge).

Seasonal Events Throughout the Year

Autumn & Halloween

From pumpkin carving, themed club nights, scary film marathons, and pub crawls where dressing as a zombie is basically mandatory, spooky season isn’t taken lightly in Sheffield!

Winter & Christmas

The city turns on the charm in December. With markets, mulled wine stalls, ice skating, and fairy lights galore, you can’t compete with Christmas in Sheffield. Perfect for cosy date nights or wholesome flat outings, you can really indulge in the festive spirit.

Spring & Summer

As soon as the sun appears, it’s BBQs in the park, street food festivals, beer gardens and impromptu house parties. Kelham Island and the Botanical Gardens are student go-tos once it’s warm enough to ditch your coat (even if it is only 12°C).

How to Find Out What’s On

Here’s how to stay in the loop with all the things to do in Sheffield for students:

  • Student Union Websites & Socials – Both universities regularly post about upcoming events and tickets.
  • Instagram – Follow places like Forge Warehouse, West Street Live, and Peddler Market for updates.
  • Facebook Events – Old-school but effective.
  • Flatmate intel – Someone in your flat always knows what’s on. Trust the group chat.
