Affordable Summer Stays in Newcastle: Why Market House is Perfect for Your Visit
Back
Newcastle might have a reputation as being a cracking night out, but the infamous Toon offers so much more than that. The city is a fantastic mix of history and heritage, with an idyllic riverside, bustling shops and bars, and plenty of green walks. If that wasn’t enough, the coast is just a 30-minute Metro ride away. So, on a hot summer’s day, you can escape the city heat and hit the beach.
If you’re heading to the city this summer, perhaps to explore your new university city, for a summer internship, or just for a staycation, here’s a look at some of the best things to fill your time:
Out and About
There’s so much to see and do in the city (and a bit further afield), so expect to rack up the steps as you wander around to check out some of these hotspots:
- A trip to Newcastle isn’t complete without a stroll along the Quayside and over the Millennium Bridge. Peppered with bars, breweries, cafes and restaurants, there’s plenty of opportunity to punctuate your walk with a drink or bite to eat. For fitness fanatics, it offers a lovely route for running or cycling. NE1’s Summer in the City returns to the Quayside this summer, with over 75 activities to enjoy, including kayak tours and twilight yoga. The Quayside also hosts an outdoor market every Sunday with food stalls and independent retailers.
- Ouseburn is a great little area of the city filled with independent shops, great pubs, brunch spots, and is generally the place to be for an afternoon of bar hopping. There’s also a community farm there that is completely free to enter and very popular with young families.
- Grainger Market is an award-winning market packed full of independent shops, handcrafted goods, and some of the best foodie spots in the city, all set within a beautiful Grade I listed building.
- For those with a longing for the sea, jump on the Metro and you can be at Tynemouth, Cullercoats or Whitley Bay within half an hour. All have gorgeous beaches and are fantastic places to visit, with lots of great food and drink spots (including some delicious seafood restaurants) and shopping opportunities.

Art and culture
Newcastle has a vibrant arts and culture scene, blending its industrial heritage with contemporary creativity:
- The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, in a former flour mill, is one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces. It’s worth going for the fourth-floor viewing platform alone, which offers stunning views of Newcastle.
- The Glasshouse International Centre for Music (the big shiny building on the River Tyne) is not only architecturally unique, but inside it hosts everything from classical and jazz to folk, indie, and world music. It has a packed events schedule over summer, including a collaboration between Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall (a Geordie superstar) and BBC Proms.
- Newcastle’s Lit & Phil Society is a stunning Grade II-listed library, and the largest independent library in the UK outside London. It hosts a range of events, from talks, concerts, readings, discussions and book launches.
- For a more unique exploration of Newcastle, head underground to the Victoria tunnel. Guided tours offer a fascinating glimpse into the city’s industrial past and life in Newcastle during World War Two, including experiencing an air raid siren.
Entertainment
- The Live Theatre is home to new theatre and stand-up comedy, and has a reputation nationally and internationally for producing some of the best critically-acclaimed new shows. If you’re in Newcastle over summer, it’s definitely worth checking out what’s on because it could be the next big West End smash hit (and you’ll get to see it at a fraction of the cost!).
- Tyneside Cinema is the only surviving news cinema still being used to show films in the UK, and it’s located in a stunning Art Deco building, having been founded in 1937. It’s also home to a couple of bars, so you can just go for a drink if there’s nothing you fancy watching.
- Football fans might want to go on a guided tour of St James’ Park, Newcastle FC’s iconic home and one of the biggest football grounds in the UK. Located in the city centre, it’s probably one of the easiest stadiums to reach in England. And if you’re looking for a true Geordie experience, you can stop off at Shearer’s Bar inside the stadium.
By now, you’ll be ready to book your trip to Newcastle! Located right in the heart of the city, you could not be closer to the action with a stay at Market House, the perfect accommodation solution for summer visitors.
At a fraction of the cost of city hotels, visitors to Market House can enjoy spacious en-suites and beautifully designed studio apartments, with everything the city has to offer right on your doorstep.
